IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Cambridge 12 Test 5, bar chart with strategies, bonus tips and sample answer
In Academic IELTS writing task 1, you are given a picture, mainly a chart or graph to explain in more than 150 words. Today I am dealing with a bar chart taken from Cambridge IELTS 12 Test 5 where a bar chart is given detailing the physical activity of men and women in Australia in the year 2010. I’ve discussed some key points for newcomers to IELTS and then some strategies to answer them. Finally, there is a sample answer which you can follow.
Title of the task 1 question:
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Strategies for answering this question:
Start with scanning the picture and finding out the eye-catching points of the given bar chart.
Looking closely at the picture, we can find some interesting points:
- Six age groups are starting with 15 to 24 and ending with 65 and over.
- In the age group 15 to 24, males dominated physical activity over women.
- In all other age groups, women’s participation in physical activity was more than men’s.
- There is a marginal difference in the figures for the age group 65 and over, which is about 0.4%.
- Overall, women were more dominant than men in taking part in physical activity.
If you are a newcomer to IELTS, you should write easily so that you can explain every piece of data including numbers, percentages, and the differences among several data. But, you need to remember that writing easy and simple sentences will not guarantee you good marks. To attain a very good band in IELTS Writing Task 1, you must learn to use compound and complex sentences. At the same time, your writing needs to be more attractive in terms of grammar variations, difficult and unknown vocabularies, coherence (logic), and cohesion (organization). So, learning to write in a difficult way will always provide better marking. However, you must practice well and regularly to write a very unique and interesting answer. It takes time and sometimes it will make you feel tired. But, you must not lose hope. Rather, you should motivate yourself and work harder.
Now, follow this sample answer below and try to read every sentence separately and slowly.
To make your practice more accurate, take a notebook and write down the whole sample answer and mark important points and words. Take help from a dictionary to learn the meanings of the keywords. Every time you write a sentence from the sample answer, match it with the picture. Thus, you can improve your writing skills.
Sample answer:
The depicted bar chart represents the proportion of regular physical activities of males and females among six age groups in Australia in 2010. Overall, women were more dominant in physical exercise than men.
The chart displays that there was evidence of a steady boost in the percentage of females who regularly worked out. Here, 52.8% of men from 15 to 24 exercised daily which was nearly 5% higher than women from that age group. However, the scenario remained quite the opposite in all other age groups.
Physical activity was more trendy among women in the 25 to 34 age group (48.9%) while males did around 6% less activity than their female counterparts. This dominance of women was more prevalent in age groups like 35 to 44, where 13% more women did workouts, in 45 to 44, where women overshadowed men by 10% approximately, and in 55 to 64, where the difference was about 8%. In the age group 65 and over, this difference was much less, where only 0.4% more females did the activity than males.

What are other vocabulary for writting task1
Dear Usha,
please check other posts or the vocabulary section.
Can we write about how the numbers increase or decrease over all age groups?
Well, you can, but the question is, “is it needed to include all the information or the most eye-catching ones?”
In my opinion, you should not include all the information because you only need to write just above 150 words.
I thanig its good one to get 6.5 band for over all

The data illustrates the proportion of Australian men and women involved in regular physical activities in 2010. Overall, women dominated the physical activities in all the age groups except the age group of 15-24 where men were more involved in physical work.
It was observed that women were more dominating then men in physicals activities among all the age groups. Though, in the age group of 15-24, the proportion of men were 52.8% which is around 5% higher than that of women who were doing regular physical activities.
However, this scenario was totally opposite in all the age groups where women were seen more active than the men. In the age group of 25-34, the proportion of women were around 6.7% higher than men but in the age group of 35-44, there was an exceptional gap where men were just 39.5% and women were 52.5% respectively doing regular activities. In the age groups between 45-64 the average of men is to women was approximately 12.5% where women dominated men. The age group of 65 and above there was a marginal difference in both the genders of 1.4%, where women did more workout than men.
