This IELTS Speaking Part 2 post deals with a common topic/cue card which is ‘a modern invention which has changed people’s life’.
Model answer:
Thank you for the topic card. I’m going to talk about one of the most widely used inventions of present time. It is global positioning system which is widely known as GPS. It has become a usual thing to use for everyone, predominantly people with smart phones. This is the up to date technology that helps to trace any specific location with the use of satellites. Now, this has become a great tool for people who want to explore the world.
GPS is the brainchild of three new generation scientists – Roger Easton, Ivan Getting, and Bradford Parkinson. Now, this is used by roughly everyone for business, military and personal functions. This technology was invented by them mainly to assist in different sorts of military operations. Routing or navigating in inaccessible places was truly difficult before this invention and the explorers had suffered a lot of difficulties as they lost the ways. But after the invention of the GPS, both exploration and travelling has become easier than before.
The GPS was commenced in the USA to crack the navigation problems in 1973, though the improvement began by the US Department of Defense in the 1960s. Around 24 different satellites were used in the preliminary phase with the plan to support the US Military. However, the greatest advancement of the system was completed in 1995. Fascinatingly, the utilization of GPS is rather cheaper now and the cell phone producers use this technology on their machines to crack the real-time position of the phone users.
GPS has brought a revolutionary change in mass people’s day to day life. When someone uses GPS, there are fewer chances to get lost in an alien place. Besides, some people use this technology with their transports to track them. It is also used to design new travelling routes too. Thus, GPS has become an integral part of our life.
Thank you.
