IELTS Speaking Part 1: General questions on Computers, Internet, Email; with example answers
This is the fifth set of general questions of IELTS Speaking Part 1 with example answers. In IELTS Speaking exam general questions or part 1 plays a very important role. Practicing the general questions over and over again can make it possible to develop your speaking skills and improve your score. Here are some technology-based questions with model answers for Speaking part 1, which, I think, will assist you a lot in your IELTS Speaking preparation. You can always add to or change the answer according to your situation.
Computers

- Do you own a computer or laptop?
- Example answer: Yes, I own a personal computer/ laptop.
- Do you use your laptop at work or at home?
- Example answer: I use my laptop both at work and at home.
- How long have you been using this device?
- Example answer: I’ve been using this device for about 4 years.
- What do you mostly do on a computer?
- Example answer: Mostly I do my official/ business/ academic works on a computer. Sometimes I entertain myself by watching movies, listening to music etc.
- How does this device help you?
- Example answer: This device helps me in many ways. It helps in my studies/ office works/ business related works. It further helps me to entertain myself in my free time.
- Do you think computers help society?
- Example answer: Yes, computers help society in many ways. It has made the global communication easy, fast and fair. It helps different organizations to keep their accounts updated and more authentic. It also helps different communities to connect and share ideas and experiences.
- Do you think computers are bad for health?
- Example answer: Yes, it might be in some cases. For example, if you use the computer for a long time, it can easily irritate and negatively affect your eyesight and the function of your brain. It is also partly responsible for Gama radiation which can be risky for your health.
- How do you think computers have changed the world?
- Example answer: Through computers, we, the people of the distant parts of the world, are now connected for 24 hours. We can easily communicate with people halfway around the world in seconds because of the fastest communication which computers or the internet can provide. Any new ideas can be easily shared with anyone very quickly. Businesses have never been easier like the way it is now. So, I think computers have changed the world completely.
- What jobs do computers do better than people?
- Example answer: Computers can do quick calculations and make swift communications which are far better and faster than people.
Internet
(Here, some answers may vary from person to person.)
- Do you regularly use the internet much during the day?
- Example answer: No, I don’t use the internet much during the day. I don’t get much time for this.
- What do you usually do on the internet?
- Example answer: I usually surf Google and Wikipedia for different information and updates on the current affairs.
- What are some advantages of the internet?
- Example answer: The internet is now a big helping hand for both academic learners and trainers. It is also used by businessmen. Different big organizations like NASA, WHO, and the UN directly depend on the internet for the latest happenings around the world.
- What are some disadvantages of the internet?
- Example answer: Internet is directly blamed for being a massive source of pornographic films and cult activities. It decreases the moral values within a person. It is also blamed for the excessive addiction of playing video and online games among the teenagers.
- Do people in your country use the internet a lot?
- Example answer: Yes, in my country people use the internet a lot.
- Do you do any shopping on the internet?
- Example answer: Yes, I do a lot of shopping on the internet. I’m a member of an online shopping portal named amazon.com. I buy lots of things from this online shopping website.

- Do you send and receive email regularly?
- Example answer: Yes, I’m a job holder and so I am bound to use email for sending and receiving different documents, images, and videos from my clients and colleagues.
- Who do you usually communicate with through email?
- Example answer: I usually communicate with my colleagues and clients through email.
- How often do you check your email?
- Example answer: I check my email every day at 10.30 am, just after signing in my office.
- Do you think writing email has strengthened or weakened people’s writing skills?
- Example answer: I think writing email has weakened people’s writing skills. This is because most of the emails are precise and brief. Brief writing affects writing skills quite negatively.
- What are some disadvantages of email?
- Example answer: Email is generally short texts. So we cannot express our inner feelings easily here. It also affects our writing skills.
