Why Your IELTS Writing Ideas Need More Development

Why Your IELTS Writing Ideas Need More Development

Many IELTS learners have relevant ideas but do not explain them fully. A short opinion or example is not always enough. To make your writing clearer and more convincing, develop each main idea step by step.

1. State the main idea

Begin the paragraph with one clear point. The reader should understand the paragraph’s main message immediately.

2. Explain the idea

Show why the idea is important or how it connects to the question. Ask yourself: “Why does this happen?” or “How does this affect people?”

3. Add a relevant example

Use an example that directly supports the point. The example does not need to be complicated, but it should clearly demonstrate the idea.

4. Link back to the question

Finish by showing how the explanation and example support your position. This helps the paragraph feel complete.

📝 Example: developing one idea

Illustrative example, not an official IELTS question.

Topic: Some people believe schools should teach more practical skills.

Underdeveloped idea: Schools should teach practical skills because they are useful. For example, students can learn cooking and money management.

Developed idea: Schools should teach practical skills because they prepare students for responsibilities outside the classroom. For example, lessons about budgeting can help young adults manage rent, bills, and daily expenses when they begin living independently. Therefore, practical education can make the transition from school to adult life easier.

The developed version gives a reason, explains the effect, and connects the example back to the main idea.

A useful paragraph pattern

Main idea → Explanation → Example → Link to the question

Before submitting your essay, check whether each body paragraph contains all four parts. If a paragraph only gives an opinion and an example, add more explanation between them.
