Cambridge IELTS 7 Test 1 Reading Passage 1 solutions with explanations

Questions 1-5: Identifying information (You have to match the information with the paragraph)

Answers:

  1. B (in Paragraph B, Line 2, 3 and 4 talks about other insects and animals which don’t depend on eyesight, e.g. night flying insects, Deep-sea fish and whales, fish and dolphins )
  2. A (in Paragraph A, line 9 and 10 says, “when dinosaurs dominated the daytime economy, our mammalian ancestors probably only managed to survive at all because they found ways of scraping a living at night.” Thus, early mammals avoided dying out.)
  3. A (in Paragraph A, line 3, 4 and 5 says, “natural selection has favoured bats that make a go of the night-hunting trade. It means bats are naturally night-hunters.)
  4. E (in Paragraph E, line 6, 7, 8,and 9 talks about the discovery of SONAR, ” the underlying mathematical theories of radar and sonar are very similar; and much of our scientific understanding of the details of what bats are doing has come from applying radar theory to them.” )
  5. Questions 6-9: Summary Completion (Use ONE WORD ONLY) All the answers are in Paragraph D

6. phantom (in Paragraph D, line 6 and 7, the word PHANTOM is connected with arm or leg. Arm or leg is synonymous to limb. “like the referred pain in a phantom limb.”)

7. echoes/ obstacles (in Paragraph D, line 8 has a word “echoes” and line 9 has a word “obstacles”. In question 7 the keyword “perceives” means “to understand” which links the words echoes/obstacles. Thus, you can choose any of these two words as your answer.)

8. depth (in Paragraph D, line 10 an 11 says, “to measure the depth of the sea under a ship”. The word MEASURE is synonymous to CALCULATED in the question.)

10. natural selection (in Paragraph E, line 2 and 3 says, “natural selection working on bats, had perfected the system tens of millions of years earlier;” which matches “long before the invention of radar)

11. radio waves/ echoes (in Paragraph E, line 4 says, “It is technically incorrect to talk about bat ‘radar’, since they do not use radio waves” This is a clear match with the question)

12. mathematical theories (in Paragraph E, line 5 and 6 says, underlying mathematical theories of radar and sonar are very similar; This is a clear match with the question)

13. zoologist (in Paragraph E, line 7, 8 and 9 says, “The American zoologist Donald Griffin, who was largely responsible for the discovery of sonar in bats, coined the term ‘echolocation’…”. A clear match with the question)
