How to Write a Clear IELTS Academic Task 1 Overview
An overview is one of the most important parts of an IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 response. It should summarise the main features without listing every number or small detail.
Look for the biggest features
Before writing the overview, identify the most noticeable trends, differences, highest points, lowest points, or major changes. Focus on what the information shows overall.
Avoid detailed numbers
Specific figures usually belong in the detail paragraphs. The overview should give the reader a general picture rather than repeat data from the visual.
Compare where possible
If one category is much higher, lower, faster, or more popular than another, mention the comparison. Comparisons often communicate the main message more clearly than separate descriptions.
Keep it concise
In most cases, two clear sentences are enough. Do not include explanations or opinions that are not shown by the visual information.
📊 Example: writing an overview
Illustrative example using fictional visual information, not an official IELTS chart.

Visual summary: Park A receives the most visitors in both years, while Park C remains the least visited. Park B shows the largest increase.
⚠️ Weak overview: Park A had 50,000 visitors in the first year and 60,000 in the second year. Park B had 30,000 visitors and then 45,000.
✅ Stronger overview: Overall, Park A was the most popular location in both years, whereas Park C attracted the fewest visitors. Park B experienced the most noticeable growth during the period.
The stronger version identifies the main comparisons and trend without filling the overview with individual figures.
Final overview check
Ask yourself: “If the reader only saw my overview, would they understand the main message of the visual?” If the answer is no, look again for the most important overall patterns.
