Five Grammar Checks Before You Submit IELTS Writing
A final grammar check can help you catch repeated mistakes before submitting your IELTS writing. Focus on common errors rather than trying to rewrite every sentence.
1. Check subject–verb agreement
Make sure singular subjects use singular verbs and plural subjects use plural verbs. Pay special attention to long sentences where the subject and verb are far apart.
2. Check verb tenses
Review whether each verb matches the time you are describing. Do not change tense without a clear reason.
3. Check articles
Look at nouns and ask whether they need “a,” “an,” “the,” or no article. Articles are easy to overlook when you are writing quickly.
4. Check sentence boundaries
Look for sentences joined only by commas. Separate them or connect them with an appropriate conjunction.
5. Check punctuation and spelling
Read the final sentence of each paragraph carefully. Check full stops, commas, capital letters, and commonly misspelled words.

Make your checks personal
Keep a list of the grammar mistakes you make repeatedly. Review that list before every practice task so your final check becomes more focused.
